Blepharoplasty — also known as eyelid surgery — is a procedure that can reduce bagginess or excess skin in the upper or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with other facial cosmetic surgeries, such as a facelift.
In this post, board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. David Magilke discusses what you can expect from an upper or lower eyelid surgery.
The Day of Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is generally performed using local anesthesia, but general anesthesia may also be used. An upper eyelid surgery may take under an hour, while a lower eyelid surgery can take around an hour and a half to complete. If you have other cosmetic procedures performed in the same surgery, expect the process to take longer.
Incisions are carefully placed to minimize visible scarring. Fat and/or excess tissue are removed or repositioned, and the incisions are closed with the skin pulled tightly over the tissues.
You’ll need to avoid driving for at least 24 hours after your procedure due to the effects of the anesthesia and pain medication, so make sure you have someone ready to take you home after surgery.
Blepharoplasty Recovery
Expect some soreness as your local anesthetic wears off. You will also experience some bruising, which will gradually dissipate over time. Follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions after surgery, which may include icing or applying ointment to your eyelids. You may also need to avoid activities that could strain your eyes and sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling.
Your sutures are typically removed five to seven days after surgery. You can generally return to work one to two weeks after surgery. Sports and exercise can generally be resumed two weeks after your procedure.
Your Eyelid Surgery Results
Swelling and bruising will impact your ability to see results right after your procedure. After about two weeks, you should see some visible results.
It can take several months to see the final results of your procedure. A successful blepharoplasty procedure should result in a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. You may look like you’re well-rested or just in a good mood. Call (503) 297-6511 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Magilke at our Portland facial plastic surgery office.
