Do you practice your skin care routine religiously but still not see the results you want? Even worse, are you worried that your routine is actually making your skin worse? At The Portland Face Doctor, Dr. David Magilke and our trusted team meet with many patients who wonder whether their skin care routine is working for or against them. Here, we outline some common skin care mistakes and how you can correct them.
Over-Washing or Over-Exfoliating
Yes, there is such a thing as over-washing or over-exfoliating your skin. If performed too zealously, these simple acts can actually irritate and damage your skin. Make it a habit to wash your face no more than two times a day using a gentle cleanser and warm water, and exfoliate with a gentle scrub once a day.
Not Washing Your Makeup Brushes Often Enough
Like your facial skin, your makeup brushes should be washed regularly. Over time, your makeup brushes can host a plethora of bacteria that, if transferred onto your face, can irritate your skin. Make it a habit to wash your brushes with warm water and/or brush cleanser once a week. Your skin will thank you for it!
Rubbing Products Into Your Skin
Rubbing or tugging is an easy way to irritate your skin. Instead, apply skin products onto your neck and face using light and gentle upward strokes.
Trying Too Many New Products at a Time
It may be tempting to try all of the latest skin products on the market simultaneously but more isn’t always better when it comes to skin care. The best way to find out whether new products are working for your skin is by trying them out one at a time. Keep in mind that it takes time for your skin to adapt to a new product, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away.
Being Lax on Sunscreen
Research shows sunscreen can reverse the signs of aging. Conversely, not applying enough sunscreen or not applying it often can cause an array of skin problems, including dryness, redness, irritation, hyperpigmentation and unsightly wrinkles. Regularly applying sunscreen is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking young and healthy. Always use broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours. Sun damage can occur year round, including in cloudy weather, so you must apply sunscreen whenever outdoors.
