Your nose should fit your face. Not too big. Not too small. No twists, humps, or bumps. It should blend in so your eyes and mouth are what people notice first. If your nose has features that dominate your appearance, rhinoplasty by Dr. David Magilke, Portland Face Doctor, can help.

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job” is a procedure that will reshape the bone and cartilage of your nose, and can significantly improve its shape and size. Humps or “bumps” can be removed, the tip can be narrowed, and the overall size can be reduced or augmented. Dr. David Magilke, Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon will tailor the rhinoplasty to your needs – because your face is unique and your nose needs to be as well.

Are You A Candidate?

Some signs to look for that may make you a good candidate for rhinoplasty:

  • You feel your nose doesn’t fit the shape of your face.
  • Your nose is perceived to be too big or too small.
  • You dislike your profile because of a “hump” on your nose.
  • You have breathing problems and cosmetic concerns.
  • You feel your nose gets noticed first and detracts from your other facial features.

Preparations for the Procedure

Dr. Magilke, Portland Face Doctor will first conduct an evaluation to assess the structural integrity of the nose and other facial features. This important rhinoplasty evaluation will provide a thorough view and understanding of what will be necessary for the process to be successful. It will also serve as a gauge for any possible risks that might come from rhinoplasty surgery.

Should no abnormalities be found, a rhinoplasty (nose job) is generally considered a simple procedure, and with proper care and rest, recovery time should be minimal for most patients. A full rhinoplasty requires wearing a splint for one week post surgery. Once the splint is removed from the nose, recovery consists mainly of swelling and bruising, if any.

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed in our AAAHC accredited surgical suite, located on the campus of Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland Oregon. Rhinoplasty is classified into two types, open and closed, depending on the nose shape and the patient’s needs. Dr. David Magilke requires a local and general anesthesia for this procedure.

An open rhinoplasty requires incisions to be made along the columella, the fleshy tip of the nose that divides the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty is when Dr. Magilke makes the incision along the inside of the nose without cutting the columella. While there are benefits to closed surgery −most noticeably a decrease in outward scarring and operating room time− the technique each person needs will be determined early on and is dependent on several physical factors.

For both open and closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Magilke provides each patient with a thorough explanation of the procedure as well as outlining the risks, benefits, and other factors involved. To reshape the area, tissue may be added or parts of the bone and cartilage may be removed to achieve the desired result.

After reshaping the nose, the tissue and skin is re-draped over the nasal structure, and a splint is placed outside the nose to support its new shape. This nose splint helps hasten the recovery process as it allows the tender area to set with minimal external pressure.

Results You Can Expect

The best rhinoplasty result is a nose that blends well with your facial features and is no longer the center of attention. Good results will produce a nose that has a natural appearance, one that will continue to improve over time.
